The Archetypal Basis of Calling (Part 1): Jung and Hillman on Purpose and Soul-making

  • Hawthorn Arts Centre (The Chamber) 360 Burwood Road Hawthorn, VIC 3122 Australia (map)
A sense of calling is generated deep in the psyche and comes to us via imagination and unexpected experiences. It occurs alongside the feeling of living a story that is unique to us and, at the same time, part of some larger significance.

Dr Glen Slater from the Pacifica Graduate Institute, USA, presents the first of two seminars with Dr Safron Rossi this weekend (bookable separately) on The Archetypal Basis of Calling. These seminars are aimed at discerning and nurturing this sense of calling by engaging archetypal patterns and figures that are most relevant to the discovery of deeper purpose.  In support of this aim we will draw on the work of CG Jung, James Hillman and Joseph Campbell, linking their key concepts and insights.

Dr Slater begins this first seminar by describing the process of human development Jung called individuation. This process invites a more conscious dialogue with the various aspects of our personality as well as discerning where calling and vocation relates to the larger human story. You'll discover what Jung called “the greater personality” and its relevance for vocation.  This will take us into a discussion of the psychological process which archetypal psychologist James Hillman referred to as soul-making.

Via a presentation of engaging ideas and images, dialogue and discussion, we will invoke the mythic imagination as a way to uncover paths of meaning and experiences of soul. This seminar is designed for anyone interested in an increased purpose and an awareness of deeper significance in either their vocational pursuits or lifestyle.
