AusAPT 2020 conference: Valuing Type in a Virtual World

Psychological type and the MBTI is widely used in career guidance, matching individuals with careers and occupations. Dr Suzanne Cremen will be a speaker at the 2020 AUSAPT virtual conference, on the topic of ‘Soul-making Work in Dark Times: A Jungian View’. Her session explores a depth psychology approach to questions of work, career and calling in the current era, through engaging with symbol, metaphor and imagination. If you have a typological preference for Intuition you’ll particularly resonate with this approach to work and vocation which values the creative unconscious and imaginative potential; though a depth psychology perspective can be valuable for all psychological types at different life stages.

Understanding Archetypes: Perspectives, Patterns and Fields

All products of the human imagination have an archetypal basis, including the most sublime art, ingenious ideas, and political and social movements. In this class you’ll learn about archetypes as structuring patterns of the psyche, that influence our ways of perceiving and responding to the world. We will consider different metaphors for understanding archetypes as universal patterns of human experience. We’ll also look at archetypes in terms of typical ecological networks which structure a system of relations, such as a family – like a field or network that is constellated around or exists between people.

Presented by Dr Suzanne Cremen, Life Artistry Centre and Pacifica Graduate Institute.

Webinar: The Soul of Australia and the Archetypal Roots of Cultural Complexes

Understanding the archetypal basis of a culture’s psyche is vital for those called to lead or be change agents in a society. Jung understood that the psyche is not just interior but also collective and social, and that archetypes “belong as much to society as to the individual”. In this lecture hosted by the International Assisi Institute, Dr Suzanne Cremen draws on rich imagery and research to discuss and lay out the web of interactive symptoms and complexes in the Australian psyche.

The Afternoon of Life (a winter retreat to discover authentic vocation)

  • Google Calendar ICS

Presented by Dr Jennifer Leigh Selig and Suzanne Cremen Davidson from Pacifica Graduate Institute (Santa Barbara, USA) and the Life Artistry Centre (Melbourne).  Join us for this three-day country retreat where we will look within to discover, uncover, even recover the meaning and purpose of the afternoon of our vocational lives.

Depth psychologist CG Jung wrote, “The afternoon of life is just as full of meaning as the morning; only its meaning and purpose are different… What youth found and must find outside, the man [and woman] of life’s afternoon must find within".  The afternoon of life refers to a stage of maturity where we feel like this time has passed or must pass, and a new time is beginning - rather than one's chronological age.

Limited to 12, the retreat is tailored towards participants' interests and needs. Be rejuvenated in an environment that's good for body and soul!

The Archetypal Basis of Calling (Part 2): Joseph Campbell on Myth and Meaning

How can we engage the mythic imagination to uncover a path of meaning and a sense of soul?

Dr Safron Rossi from the Pacifica Graduate Institute and Opus Archives (USA) discusses Joseph Campbell’s mythological hero’s journey and the task of the hero to surrender to a deeper call—the mythic twin of the union of the unconscious and conscious aspects of our being. The Archetypal Basis of Calling (Part 1): Jung and Hillman on Purpose and Soul-making

A sense of calling is generated deep in the psyche and comes to us via imagination and unexpected experiences. It occurs alongside the feeling of living a story that is unique to us and, at the same time, part of some larger significance.

Dr Glen Slater from the Pacifica Graduate Institute (USA) presents the first of two fascinating seminars aimed at discerning and nurturing this sense of calling by engaging archetypal patterns and figures that are most relevant to the discovery of deeper purpose.  Click here for full details and registration
